This is a story that started in april 2006, on the second northern soul trip to the united states of america this time the destination was new york (the first one was in los angeles 2004) avon clive horden from the ironbridge gorge in shropshire, a veteran northern soulie from the catacombs and rolladrome days (temple street wolverhampton) had 2 missions. first to see his brother stewart (who he had not seen for many years - “now living in new york”) and the second having a great northern soul american holiday.
One morning on 42nd street, outside port authority bus station the two brothers met and started talking about the old days when they used to go to wigan casino together remembering that the casino was a new discoveries venue. One thing led to another and the conversation changed to lets have a go at finding the last few 1960’s northern soul elusive gems.
A communication channel was set up and avon returned back to great britain, in the meantime back in the usa stewarts started the search.
One by one the records started to be discovered, in 2007 the first record box containing 100 - 7” vinyl records (all originals and mega rare) many of them one off’s arrived in the shropshire gorge - then the second and third box arrived.
Today there has been 40 boxes sent to great britain (4000 records) most are new discoveries, and still the boxes keep coming.
During the 4-year search, the brothers have met and corresponded to a female american who became interested in northern soul and she too started finding and collecting northern soul vinyl records (Evon Handras). Through the forward thinking and passion for the music the partnership has developed to the point that Evon is now one of the americans top female northern soul dj’s who regularly plays her music at new york’s No 1 northern soul venue “subway soul” (www.subwaysoul.com)
The brother horden then started supplying northern soul shows to new york’s and los angeles top radio station www.viva-radio.com and on the 19th September 2008 the first brother horden radio show went out across the world.
To date the brother horden show’s have included the transatlantic season which involved the very best in american northern soul dj’s and the very best of the british northern soul dj’s coming together to broadcast great soul music, brother horden also was involved in the first northern soul film “souled out” release title “SoulBoy” supplying the set with the rarest badges of the pre 1974 era. In 2009 brother horden put together a female dj transatlantic season and in 2010, brother horden broadcasted the “wigan casino” story and the legendary “catacombs” season - in the future a scooter transatlantic season is planned.
